In mid February, 1916, 20th Division which included 7th Cornwall Light Infantry of 61 Brigade, moved to Ypres and took over the Boesinghe sector in the north-east of the salient, on the left of the British line. When not in the front line, which was more a series of posts rather than a continuous line of trenches, they were in dug-outs on the canal bank. On 31st March, 1916, 7th Cornwall Light Infantry was occupying these front line posts when one of them, No. 6 post, was utterly destroyed by an enemy high explosive shell and six of the men there were killed.
